The Camp, Northeast Wind and the Messiah

 Northeast Wind

Have you ever wondered what Jacob’s blessings over his sons have to do with their placement in the tribal camps found in Numbers 2?

After watching Dr. Alewine’s teaching on the four winds, my mind started racing with questions. If you haven't watched the two part teaching, I highly recommend it! Essentially, she goes into the tribal camps, their placement in the wilderness, and the different winds associated with each camp. After watching, a dear sister and I started questioning why certain tribes were placed together.

Before we dive in today, I’ve added a few images to help my fellow visual learners.

Let’s begin with the tribal camp of Judah, which also includes the tribes of Issachar and Zebulon in the east. All 3 sons came from Leah and they were her 4th, 5th, and 6th sons. On their banner is the lion.

  • Genesis 49:8‭-‬15

Judah, so you are— your brothers will praise you: Your hand will be on your enemies’ neck. Your father’s sons will bow down to you. A lion’s cub is Judah— from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He crouches, lies down like a lion, or like a lioness— who would rouse him? The scepter will not pass from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until he to whom it belongs will come. To him will be the obedience of the peoples. Binding his foal to the vine, his donkey’s colt to the choice vine, he washes his garments in wine, and in the blood of grapes his robe. His eyes are darker than wine, and teeth that are whiter than milk.

Zebulun will dwell by the seashore, and be by a harbor for ships— his distant border reaches Sidon.

Issachar is a strong-boned donkey, lying down between two saddlebags. He saw that a resting place was good, and that the land was pleasant. He leaned his shoulder to bear a burden, and became a forced laborer.

We know Yeshua is the lion of the tribe of Judah, but when we look at Issachar and Zebulon camping with him, what picture does that paint of our Messiah?

Judah was the 4th born of Jacob and Leah. On the 4th day of creation the sun, moon and stars were created and that is associated with government and authority. The sun and moon rule our time and we use them to know the moedim. It's also the main branch on the menorah and represents the Ruach! Jacob's blessing tells us that Judah was strong, a leader, and a lion. When the pillar of cloud would start to move in the wilderness, Judah was the first to follow, and would lead the children of Israel to the next place Adonai chose to set up camp.

Zebulon was Leah's 6th son, but the 5th son blessed by Jacob. Birds and fish were created on the 5th day and that's associated with migration and the spreading of seed (good news) of Day 3. Jacob's blessing says he will dwell by the shore and be a harbor for ships. The spirit of Adonai associated with Day 5 is power.

Issachar is Leah's 5th son but the 6th son blessed by Jacob, and is a strong boned donkey, lying between 2 saddlebags.  On the 6th day of creation the beasts of the field were created and then man. God breathed his breath of life into Adam. The spirit of Adonai associated with Day 6 is knowledge.

As we’re mulling over all the pieces of the puzzle, I began to think of the Messiah riding into Jerusalem on a donkey! Yeshua, son of David, comes riding on a donkey (Issachar), and He is  the bridge between the guardians and keepers of the Torah (Judah) and the disciples (Zebulon) going out into the nations to share the gospel to His lost sheep! What a beautiful picture of the east wind!

The rabbi's say the north wind is incomplete and is the dwelling place of King Messiah!

So how does the north wind fit with the east wind?

The north divisional camp is made up of Dan, Asher and Naphtali. Dan is Rachel's '1st' son through her maid-servant, Bilhah. Naphtali is Rachel's ‘2nd’ through Bilhah, and Asher is Leah's '5th' (the 1st through Zilpah(Leah's biological 5th son was Issachar)).  This divisional camp is mixed; none of them are directly from Rachel or Leah. In the birth order from Jacob, Dan is 5, Naphtali is 6, and Asher is 8.

  • Genesis 49:16‭-‬18‭, ‬20‭-‬21

Dan will judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. Let Dan be a serpent beside a road, a viper beside a path, who strikes a horse’s heels, so that its rider falls backward. For your salvation I wait, Adonai! Asher—rich is his food— he will provide delicacies fit for a king. Naphtali is a doe let loose, who offers words of beauty.

Dan means 'a judge' and his blessing from Jacob tells us that he WAITS FOR SALVATION (Yeshua)! Israel is being tested and creation is receiving great judgment from the Judge in the last days.  Just as Judah was the leader of Israel, Dan was the leader of the 5th and final divisional camp to move out.  They were the rear guard, walking in the power of Adonai, the 5th spirit according to Isaiah 11:2.

Asher is Jacob's 8th son and his blessing says, 'rich is his food-he will provide delicacies fit for a king.'  The first thing that popped into my mind when reading this blessing is circumcision, Shemini Atzeret, and the wedding feast of the Lamb! You can also see the connection to Sukkot in the phrase, ‘rich is his food.’

Naphtali is Jacob's 6th son. He is a doe let loose and offers words of beauty, the Torah! The Torah is our manual of how to walk as the man Adonai created us to be in the Garden instead of reacting as a beast! Da’at, or knowledge, the 6th spirit of Adonai, is where we can intimately know our Messiah in a sacrificial way and better walk in the Torah and be a light in our communities.

If we go with the idea that the north wind is incomplete and will be fulfilled with Yeshua as King, I think this camp and their blessings describe Him beautifully!

Now let’s go back to Yeshua riding into Jerusalem on a donkey and see the north and east winds working together.

Luke 19 tells us Yeshua was visiting Zacchaeus in Jericho, northeast of Jerusalem, and this was the last place He visited before traveling to Jerusalem!  So this northeast wind (Yeshua from Judah/east the Messiah Dan/north) was blowing towards Jerusalem right before Passover and His crucifixion. Pretty fascinating, isn’t it?!

We can go back even further to when Yeshua was baptized and tempted in the wilderness. Where did He go afterward? Matthew 4:13-17 tells us he went to Capernaum in the north to the tribal allotments of Zebulon (Judah/east) and Naphtali (Dan/north) by the sea regions. Yeshua then begins to recruit His disciples by the Sea of Galilee!

I don’t know about you, but I was and still am mind blown at the picture painted for us of Messiah in the eastern and northern divisional camps and Jacob's blessings! Remember, Judah’s camp in the east was the first to move out when the pillar of cloud lifted from the Tabernacle and the divisional camp of Dan was the last to move out.

  • Isaiah 52:12

For you will not go out in haste, nor will you go in flight, for Adonai will go before you, and the God of Israel will be your rear guard.

  • The Revelation 22:13

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.

Here’s a random fun fact connecting the east and the north, too.  Bezalel and Oholiab were the 2 men who were given wisdom in order to craft the tabernacle.  Bezalel was from the tribe of Judah, while Oholiab was from the tribe of Dan. They were in charge of creating a physical representation of Yeshua and His community coming together to serve Adonai and their fellow brothers. Pretty neat, right?!

I know this was a lot of information and I pray you’ve learned something to help you grow in your journey! Have you made any other connections with Jacob’s blessings or the divisional camps? I’d love to learn from you!  Please share your insight with everyone!

Be pressed and be blessed!

  • Isaiah 2:1‭-‬5

The word which Isaiah, son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem: It will come to pass in the last days that the mountain of Adonai’s House will stand firm as head of the mountains and will be exalted above the hills. So all nations will flow to it. Then many peoples will go and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of Adonai, to the House of the God of Jacob! Then He will teach us His ways, and we will walk in His paths.” For Torah will go forth from Zion and the word of Adonai from Jerusalem. He will judge between the nations and decide for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning knives. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, nor will they learn war any more. Come house of Jacob, let us walk in the light of Adonai.

  • Micah 4:1‭-‬3

But at the end of days the mountain of Adonai’s House will be established as chief of the mountains, and will be raised above the hills. Peoples will flow up to it. Then many nations will go and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of Adonai, to the House of the God of Jacob! Then He will direct us in His ways, and we will walk in His paths.” For Torah will go forth from Zion, and the word of Adonai from Jerusalem. He will judge between many peoples and decide for mighty nations far off. They will beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning shears. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, nor will they learn war again.

  • Isaiah 52:9‭-‬12

Break forth in joy, sing together, you ruins of Jerusalem, for Adonai has comforted His people. He has redeemed Jerusalem. Adonai has bared His holy arm before the eyes of all the nations. All the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our God. Leave, leave! Get out of there! Touch no unclean thing. Go out of her midst. Purify yourselves, you who carry the vessels of Adonai. For you will not go out in haste, nor will you go in flight, for Adonai will go before you, and the God of Israel will be your rear guard.
